Overview
Suppressing a customer marks their email address or phone number so that no messages can be sent to that contact — even if they appear in a campaign audience. Unlike erasing data, suppression keeps the customer's record fully intact in Endear.
Use suppression when you want to guarantee a customer is never contacted but still need to retain their data for reporting or historical purposes. If you need to permanently remove a customer's data for compliance or GDPR reasons, see How do I erase customer data? instead.
How suppression works
Suppression is applied at the contact-method level — you suppress a specific email address or phone number. Once suppressed, any message to that contact will be blocked regardless of which campaign or team member initiates it. The customer's profile and history remain visible in Endear.
How to suppress a customer
Suppression is managed through the Marketing Subscriptions importer. To suppress one or more customers:
Click Data, then Marketing Subscriptions.
Click Import Contacts, then + Create job.
Click Continue, then Import Data, then select Marketing Consent.
Upload a spreadsheet with the following columns:
Field | Required | Description |
Email or Phone Number | Required | The contact method to suppress |
Suppression Status | Required | Yes or Suppressed to suppress; No or Unsuppressed to remove a suppression |
Occurred At | Optional | Date of suppression. Endear will fill this in automatically if left blank. |
Map your columns to the template fields and click Continue.
When prompted, click Suppressions and complete the upload.
Review and click Confirm & Submit.
API-based suppression
Suppression can also be applied programmatically via the Endear API. Contact our support team for guidance on the relevant endpoint.
Unsuppressing a customer
To remove a suppression, follow the same import process and set the Suppression Status field to No (or Unsuppressed).
