How to use activation codes for PIN-enabled devices

Use activation codes to register devices for PIN login without needing an admin or manager on-site.

Applies to: Admins, Managers, Users

Note: This is a component of the Pin-Enabled experience that is not live yet, but is slated to launch in late June 2026. Learn more here.

Overview

Sometimes you need to register a device for PIN login but you can't be physically on the device — for example, you're setting up a new tablet for a remote store, or onboarding a team that's in a different location. Activation codes solve this. An admin or manager generates one or more activation codes, shares them with the staff at the device, and the staff use the code to register the device on first login.

Step-by-Step Guide

For admins and managers:

1. Go to Settings, then select PIN-Enabled Devices.

2. Select the tab Activation Codes, then in the top right-hand corner select Generate Activation Codes.

3. Choose how many to create.

4. Codes default to a 30-day expiration. Copy or download the codes and share them with the staff member at the destination device.

For staff on the new device:

1. Open Endear on the new device. The login screen appears. Select Have a PIN? Register Device

2. Enter the activation code you were given. The device is registered, and from now on you (and your teammates with PINs) can sign in on it with just your PIN.

Understanding activation code statuses

Activation codes have three possible statuses:

  • Active — Not yet expired and not yet redeemed. Still usable to register a device.

  • Redeemed — Successfully used to register a device. The activation code detail page shows the device it registered and the date it was redeemed.

  • Expired — Was not used before the 30-day expiration. No longer usable.

The Activation Codes list is sorted by status (Active → Redeemed → Expired), then by date generated (newest first).

Frequently asked questions

My login screen doesn't provide an option to input an activation code.

Activation codes are only shown on devices with at least 1 previous login. Have a staff member login first, then on your next login you will see the option to input an activation code.

What happens if a code expires before it's used?
The code is marked Expired and cannot be used. Generate a new code if you still need to register the device.

Can I deactivate a code I no longer want used?
Manual deactivation isn't available yet — codes will simply expire after 30 days. Reach out over Live Chat if you need to deactivate a code.
