This guide will help you understand how WhatsApp conversation credits work and how costs vary by country when starting new conversations.

Overview

WhatsApp conversations require you to spend credits for each message. The credit cost to start a new conversation differs based on the customer's location. In other words, if you are an international brand, sending WhatsApp messages to your U.S. customers you will incur different credit costs compared to messaging your Australian customers. The credit cost for all subsequent messages within an active conversation is typically 1 credit.

Examples of credit costs to start a conversation by country:

  • United States & Canada: 6 credits to start

  • United Kingdom: 12 credits to start

  • Australia: 16 credits to start

  • Saudi Arabia: 10 credits to start

  • Germany: 29 credits to start

  • Netherlands: 33 credits to start

What is considered a new conversation vs. subsequent message?

The conversation starts when you send your first message to the customer. This first message is most often an approved message template to establish consent.

After this first message (which has the variable credit cost based on customer country), all subsequent messages within the 24-hour period cost 1 credit.

Note: Learn more about messaging consent here.

What about receiving messages?

Receiving inbound messages from customers is free.
