How do I setup WhatsApp?

Learn how to setup WhatsApp as a contact method for your brand.

Updated this week

Applies to: Admins

Before You Begin

Make sure you have:

  • Admin Privileges in Endear - Currently, WhatsApp registration must be turned on by a brand admin as it involves billing implications.

  • Access to your brand's Meta business account - In most cases, your personal Facebook account will have access to the brand's Meta Business account, so you will be logging into your personal account. This is normal and expected.

  • Ad blockers turned off - Ad blockers can cause issues during the setup process

Overview

Connect your WhatsApp Business Account

1. Navigate to Settings, then select Contact Methods

2. Select Add Contact Method

3. Select Setup WhatsApp

4. From the pop-up, select Get Started.

5. You will be taken to the billing page. Confirm the addition of WhatsApp to your subscription, ensure you have a valid payment method on file, then select Confirm.

6. Endear walks you through WhatsApp setup using a checklist. To get to this checklist, navigate the same way Home > Settings > Contact Methods > Add contact method > Add WhatsApp. Click Login with Facebook and you'll be taken to Meta's authentication screen.

  • Note: You can return to this checklist at any time by following the same path: Settings > Contact Methods > Add Contact Method > Setup WhatsApp.

7. Select Continue as "your name" and then select Get started.

Important: You will most likely log in with your personal Facebook account. Meta does not allow multiple identities - your personal Facebook account is typically the same account that has access to your Meta Business account. This is normal and expected.

8. Select your Meta Business Portfolio. You may choose an existing business portfolio or create a new one. Most brands will only have one portfolio here. If you operate multiple separate businesses, you may see multiple portfolios. Then select Next.

9. Select or create your WhatsApp Business Account. Then select Next.

  • Important: Most brands only need ONE WhatsApp Business account. You can set up multiple phone numbers under a single WhatsApp Business account. That being said, you can have multiple WhatsApp Business accounts under the same brand.

Part 2: Naming Guidelines for Meta Approval

Before you proceed with adding phone numbers, it's critical to understand Meta's naming requirements. Meta reviews and approves your business names and display names, and mismatches can cause rejections.

Business Account Name

  • Should match your brand name exactly

  • Do NOT add suffixes like "-Endear" or store identifiers

  • Meta uses this name when reviewing your display names for approval

Display Names (for individual phone numbers)

  • Should be your brand name, or brand name + location identifier

  • Keep names clear and unambiguous

  • Examples:

    • "Brand Name" (single location or general use)

    • "Brand Name NYC" (regional identifier)

  • Any confusion between your business account name and display names may cause Meta to reject your application

Part 3: Enable WhatsApp phone numbers

1. Select +Add phone number

2. Choose your phone number type. You have two options:

  • Option A: Use an existing Endear number (Recommended): Select one or multiple phone numbers from your existing Endear numbers. This is the easiest setup method. You can select multiple numbers at once

  • Option B: Bring your own number: Log in with Facebook and complete the authentication process. You'll be prompted to verify ownership of the number via SMS code

    • IMPORTANT: You must connect to the same WhatsApp business account that you connected in the previous step.

3. Complete your WhatsApp sender profile. For each phone number, you'll need to:

  • Decide who has access - Select which team members can send messages from this number

  • Review the internal name - This is for internal reference only

  • Enter the display name - This is what customers will see (follow naming guidelines in Part 2)

  • Provide address and website URL - This information is visible to customers

Note: The display name, address, and website URL will be visible to customers in WhatsApp.

Below is how your business info is displayed to customers within WhatsApp:

4. Select Save

Part 4: Set Up Message Prompts

Before you can send outbound WhatsApp messages, you must set up and get approval for message prompts.

  • You can receive inbound messages without prompts

  • You must have approved prompts to send outbound messages

What Happens After Setup?

Approval Timeline

  • Most setup is immediate - Your WhatsApp connection is active right away

  • Message prompts must be reviewed and approved by Meta before you can send outbound messages (you can receive inbound messages immediately)

  • Display names may take additional time for Meta to approve. Your messages will send immediately, but the business name may not appear to customers until approval is complete

You're Ready to Use WhatsApp!

Once your prompts are approved, you can start sending WhatsApp messages through Endear. Your team members with access can begin having conversations with customers.

FAQs

  • Can I use the same phone number for both SMS and WhatsApp?

    • Yes, you can use an existing Endear number for WhatsApp.

  • What if I already have a WhatsApp Business account set up elsewhere?

    • You can bring your existing number to Endear by selecting "Bring your own number" during setup.

  • What if I need to connect multiple WhatsApp Business accounts?

    • Contact Endear support to enable multiple business account support. This is not the default setting but can be enabled for brands that need it.

  • I have a business page on Facebook. Do I need a Meta Business account?

    • While you can create business pages without a formal Meta Business account, you will need a verified Meta Business account to use WhatsApp with Endear. Most brands using Facebook/Instagram for business already have this set up.
