Why do my images or GIFs get compressed in SMS messages?

Learn how Endear compresses images and GIFS and what to expect when sending these large files via SMS.

Updated yesterday

To ensure your SMS messages are successfully delivered, Endear automatically compresses all images and GIFs to meet SMS requirements. This article explains our approach and what you can expect.

How Compression Works in Endear

  • All image and GIF attachments are automatically compressed when added to an SMS message

  • We use a best effort approach to maintain quality while reducing file size

  • Compression is applied regardless of the original file size

  • Compression is based on the complexity of the image, not just the original file size

Size Limitations

While there isn't a file size limit we can specify (as compression results vary), be aware that:

  • Very large GIFs may not compress enough to meet SMS requirements

  • Complex images with many colors and details may be too large even after compression

  • The SMS channel itself (not Endear) ultimately determines what can be delivered

When Attachments Are Too Large

If an attachment is too large even after compression, Endear will automatically convert the attachment to a link. This ensures your message is delivered, even when the attachment exceeds SMS limitations

Best Practices When Sending Images and GIFs

  • Use simpler images when possible, images with fewer colors and details compress better

  • Avoid lengthy animated GIFs, shorter animations with fewer frames work best

  • Consider static images instead of GIFs for important visual content

  • For video content, consider a thumbnail image with a link to the content

  • Test your messages by sending it to yourself to verify how attachments appear

Is there a maximum file size I should use?

While there isn't a specific file size guarantee, starting with smaller, simpler images typically yields better results. However, remember that the final compressed size depends on the image complexity, not just the original file size.

Can I disable compression?

No, compression is necessary to meet SMS requirements and cannot be disabled. Without compression, most images and GIFs would fail to send entirely.
